Do Noise-Cancelling Headphones Block All Noise?

No, noise-cancelling headphones do not cut out all noise. While they are effective at reducing the volume of certain types of sound, not everything can be silenced. Noise-cancelling headphones work best for low-frequency, repetitive sounds — this includes things like the roar of an aeroplane engine and background air conditioning noise. They silence these sounds by using waves of opposite frequency.

However, they are less effective against higher-frequency noise. This includes things like chatter or sudden noises.

For instance, if somebody near you is talking or a dog barks, although your headphones have reduced the noise, it is still audible to some degree. So although noise-cancelling headphones are a great help, they don’t block everything.
