Below are the simple steps to determine if your noise-cancelling headphone is working as expected.
- Select a Noisy Environment: Locate somewhere with background noise. A crowded street or coffee shop is fine. The busier the background, the better.
- Noise Cancellation - Enable or “turn on” the ANC by donning the headphones. Make sure you have turned it up.
- Listen without Music: Listen outside. The first step is to listen to the noise around you. You’re supposed to hear the headphones drowning out some of it. It’s actually low-frequency sounds (think: engine noise or humming) that ANC is most effective at eliminating.
- Compare ANC On and Off: Turn off noise cancelling to experience the sound quality. With ANC disabled, you should hear more noise from your environment. It should be quieter with it on.
- Test With Music: Now play some music or a podcast. The ANC must become more pronounced, and interference must be less pronounced. You probably won’t need to crank the volume up.
In other words, the only real way to test noise-cancelling headphones is to find out how well they cancel noise. The more they obstruct, the better it is for the ANC.
